How to Enable Solidworks Realview graphics on gaming video cards

For the lucky owners of non-professional graphics cards :) there is an opportunity to enable Realview in SolidWorks by editing the registry. Consider the options for ATI and Nvidia (the most common brands, the rest I think the technique is the same). You can download reg-files for ATI and Nvidia for versions SW 2008-2017 (you can enable Realview and on earlier versions, the same principle, you need to edit the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branch instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER). So, let's start with Nvidia.
1) First you need to know the exact name of the video card.
To look the correct name of a video card it is possible in the register along the way:

20XX(your version Solidworks)\Performance\Graphics\Hardware\Current

Renderer - The name of the video card
Vendor - Manufacturer

or open the device manager (Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager), open the list of "Video adapters"

Correctly enter the name of your video card, save it. Now, we enter the data into the registry, run the file, agree.

There is a more universal way that activates Realview for all Nvidia and ATI graphics cards.

It was tested on both Nvidia and ATI video cards, and it is also used in portable assemblies.

2) AMD.

As with Nvidia, you need to know the exact name of the video card.

I do not specifically consider the way to enable Realview by editing drivers for the video card (for the ID of the video card the name changes to a professional one). If, in the case of editing the registry, we apply parameters for professional graphics cards to the game, then in the case of drivers, the path is reversed: we change the name of the video card so that the parameters of the video card are applied to it. I think this way is unproductive, you can do the same with the registry and much quicker and painless.

Note this is a universal reg-file, i.e. does not matter the name of the video card. If this method does not work on your graphics card, then enter the name of the video card, as in the example above.
For Solidworks 2012, the keys have not changed compared to Solidworks 2011, only a year has changed.

Universal reg-files for different versions of Solidworks

You can experiment with the settings of the video card in the registry in the Solidworks branch. At any time, you can restore the default settings for the video adapter, for this, in the directory

"C: \ Program Files \ SOLIDWORKS Corp \ SOLIDWORKS \ lang" (the default path).

there is a file "graphicshardware.reg", which contains the default settings for the video adapter. Record the data in the registry and all changes will return to their original state, as after installing Solidworks.

By the way, in the same place there are two files "userpref.reg" and "userprefx64.reg", containing the user's default settings for 32 and 64-bit systems. Those. If necessary, you can return all the default settings.

There is a program Realhack (not mine), including Realview 4.0.0, unfortunately it does not always work.

How update SOLIDWORKS 2018 Toolbox.

Manually Updating SolidWorks Toolbox

Initial data:
  • Installed Solidworks 2012x64
  • Installed Solidworks 2018x64
Update the Solidworks Toolbox 2012 to Toolbox 2018 with the functionality preserved.

  • Copy the previous Solidworks database to the new location 

Default path Solidworks database located C:\SolidWorks Data.
In the System Options dialog box, click Hole Wizard/Toolbox.
2. Run Solidworks 2018, click Options   (Standard toolbar).
In the System Options dialog box, click Hole Wizard/Toolbox and Browse to the Hole Wizard and Toolbox folder location.

4. Previous versions of Solidworks used a another database format (mdb), must be updated to the swbrowser.sldedb used by SOLIDWORKS 2015 DatabaseConverter located in the C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\Toolbox\data utilities. Right click the ‘DatabaseConverter.exe’ and select run as administrator.

5. Click "Convert".  This will create a ‘SWBrowser.sldedb’ file in the same location as the ‘SWBrowser.mdb’

When the conversion process is finished (100%), close the Database Converter.

During the conversion process, the file swbrowser.sldedb-journal appears, after the conversion it is deleted.

After the conversion, two new files appeared, the converted swbrowser.sldedb database and the swbrowserReport.txt error report

6. Now you need to update the converted SWBrowser.sldedb database to the current version of Solidworks. If you try to connect the database to Solidworks, we get an error message

Right click the ‘UpdateBrowserDatabase.exe’  or ‘UpdateBrowserData.exe’ depending on which version you are using and select run as administrator.

7. Clixk "Update". The database update begins.

The Update dialog box of the Toolbox "Update Toolbox Database" will close automatically after completion.

After the update, a copy of the Solidworks Toolbox database file of the previous version appeared.

It should be noted that in this technique swbrowser.mdb is first converted into swbrowser.sldedb, with its subsequent updating. Another option is possible: update swbrowser.mdb, and then convert it to swbrowser.sldedb.

In this case, you need to run the UpdateBrowserData.exe file with administrator rights and update the database.

And after the upgrade, convert the database by completing steps 4,5.

Important!!! For versions beginning with Solidworks 2012, the Toolbox update process is complete. You can connect the Toolbox and use it, but it is advisable to take further steps to make possible changes to the foreign ISO, DIN, etc. standards. If you update the Solidworks Toolbox database version lower than 2012, then these steps are mandatory.

8. Run the administrator with the installation path of the installation path SOLIDWORKS 2015 \ sldtoolboxupdater.exe

Click Solidworks / Toolbox installation media location, specify the path to the installation disk of Solidworks 2015. Press the "Progress" button, the process has started.

After this step, the ToolboxFiles.index file appeared in the D: \ SolidWorks Data \ browser directory, which contains indexable information about the Solidworks Toolbox database.

The Solidworks Toolbox 2018 update process has been completed successfully!

Of course, if you chose to update the existing Toolbox when you installed Solidworks 2018, then all these actions do not need to be performed. Everything will work and so :).

N.B. In this case, the correct method for updating is described, but it should be noted that the files from Solidworks Toolbox 2012 will fit all the next versions. And accordingly, any file from the younger version will fit into the older version. The only condition is the minimum file version of Solidworks 2012. The fact is that since Solidworks 2012, the Toolbox files contain all the data needed to create configurations. Those. the presence of SWBrowser.mdb is not necessary for the functioning of the details from the Toolbox. Some information from the database is taken, for example the master of holes takes parameters of standards from it. Thus, you can copy the standard from the previous version to the folder with the installed Toolbox (Solidworks Data) in the Browser directory, for example, GOST. After that, delete the file \ Solidworks Data2012 \ browser \ ToolboxFiles.index, run the solid and connect the toolbox. The connection will be much longer than usual, Solidworks re-indexes the files again, after that the GOST standard should appear in the Toolbox.

How Import and Export Hole Wizard Data with Excel

You can import and export Hole Wizard data with help Excel files in the Configuration tool with SOLIDWORKS 2018. 

Now you can import and export data to the Hole Wizard in the configurator tool SOLIDVORKS Toolbox 2018.

This is helpful when you edit an entire standard or create a few new sizes of holes.
Do the following steps

  • In SOLIDWORKS, click Tools-Options-System Options-Hole Wizard/Toolbox-Configure.
  • From the Windows Start menu, click All Programs-SOLIDWORKS 2018-SOLIDWORKS Tools-Toolbox Settings 2018-Configure.

An Excel file can be exported first to obtain the proper setup and existing sizes. This Excel file has 3 sheets at the bottom, analogous to the Standard Properties of a Hole Wizard type:
  • Sizes
  • Thread Data (besides Straight Holes)
  • Screw Clearances (besides for Tapped Holes)

Once you have customized the exported Excel file, save as a exclusive filename (so you have a copy of the original Excel setup) and then use Import Hole Data Tables.
